Website:www.hsvpolice.comEmail:Angie.DeNoon@hsvcity.com - City-wide Neighborhood Watch TipsPosted on: 2010-10-05Hello Neighbors,
I attended a meeting of the City-wide Neighborhood Watch group tonight. It was mostly an awards ceremony, and one neat thing is that the officer who patrols our area and others in the northwest was honored with 'Policeman of the Year'. I met him tonight and am setting up a meeting with him to go over more things for us to be aware of.
I wanted to share some tips with you.
1.) First of all, when you set out garbage, avoid setting out empty boxes of newly purchased items. It advertises to potential thieves what you just purchased and what is in your house. Empty boxes that had TVs, stereos, computers, expensive things like that. I have seen some folks do this very thing, so be careful! Cut or chop up your boxes and put them in your garbage container or at a minimum, set them out a few minutes before the garbage truck arrives.
2.) Alarms systems. Thieves hate alarms. If you can't afford an alarm system, get stickers and signs that mimic the real thing and it will make thieves think twice. They look for the easiest place to rob.
3.) When is the best time to do a patrol? Well, it depends, but the highest number of robberies occur during the daytime when folks are at work. So, daytime patrols are a good thing. If you notice something strange going on, call 256-722-7100. If you notice a van parked outside someone's house that is not normally there (that is being loaded up), and the owner is gone, check it out more closely. If it looks suspicious, call 256-722-7100. Police will come within minutes.
4.) High hedges and bushes. Might be a good place to hide at night, so as you patrol at night, look more carefully at hedges to see if anyone is hiding in them.
5.) Engraving your possessions. This is an excellent way to help get your stolen items back. Don't put your SSN on them. Put your driver's license number on them. This is the best ID. I have an engraver for anyone to borrow. You can have it for 2 days, then I need it back so it can be used by somebody else. It's free for you to use. Call me at 256-895-6733 and let me know.
6.) If you encounter someone roaming the neighborhood asking to do odd jobs, beware! If you know him/her, then OK. But if you feel uncomfortable in any way, for any reason, call 256-722-7100. That is the hot line. One such thing happened in a neighborhood recently where a man was asking folks if he could trim their trees. One woman was uncomfortable with him. She called: 256-722-7100 and the police came and it turned out he was wanted in Oklahoma for bank robbery.
7.) Leaving garage doors open -- some of you leave your garage door open when you leave home, but it is closed when you are home. Thus, it is pretty easy to determine if you are home or not! Also, close the doors if you are not in or around the garage. It advertises what you have and may embolden a thief to come check it out. Those of you who are on late patrols -- like I usually do -- and you come across a garage door that is open, ring the doorbell, ID who you are and that you are with Neighborhood Watch and remind them to close their garage door. Sometimes folks are watching TV or something and forget.
More later....
I am going to have a Western Hills Neighborhood Watch meeting probably within a month or so. We will try to have a guest speaker or two to attend our group. Is there anybody who could help with some cookies for that meeting?
Have a safe week and great weekend!
John Abbott

- West Precinct Community WatchPosted on: 2010-07-13To All - I attended the West Precinct Community Watch Coordinators' Meeting on 3 Jun 2010. I have attached a summary of the meeting and resource information provided at the meeting - good information to keep readily available. Request that you review the information and pass on the information to your neighbors. Just as a reminder, the new West Ridge Community Watch Coordinator is Mr. John Abbot and the new patrol scheduler is Mrs. Cathy Radzinski. Request that everyone continue to stay involved with watching our community. The police can only be effective if we actively participate in the process.

(1696 LONG LEAF DRIVE). MAY GOD BLESS YOUR NEW HOME & KEEP IT SAFE! - Coyote in the neighborhoodPosted on: 2010-04-03FYI to the neighborhood:
There was a mangy coyote in our backyard early this morning (4/2) around 6:15 am. If you have small animals, you may want to keep them inside at night. We called Animal Control, was transferred to 3 different departments but no one seemed too concerned. It left our backyard on Weymouth and went into a yard on Pinewood. - Looking For Phone NumberPosted on: 2010-01-13Hi, neighbors. I recalled getting a flyer from a gentleman in the neighborhood (?Bubba Thrash) starting a ministry and accepting donations. I am receiving a new refrigerator tomorrow and would like to donate my old one to this gentleman. Do any of you have his contact information (I cannot locate where I put it.)
Thank you!

Super Heroes of your Garden - Tree Help!Posted on: 2009-08-11Hi Ya’ll,
It’s me again. The neighbor with the never ending issues. My neighbor pointed out I have a possible sick Pine Tree. Is there any Pine Tree experts in the Neighborhood? I need to understand the future of this tree. Any suggestions? It looks like it is dying. The pine needles on a lot of the limbs have turned red / dead. But there are other limbs that look nice and green. Also, can something like this spread to other trees?
Chad - Roofers?Posted on: 2009-08-11Hello Neighbors,
I have not put a new roof on my house yet but will be soon. I guess the best question to ask is: Who should I not use? Seems like many choices.
Chad - Painter/Gutter Cleaning RecommendationPosted on: 2009-08-11I would like to recommend Tommy Franklin as an option for your painting, gutter/roof cleaning, etc. Tommy recently painted our wood trim, pressure washed and stained our deck, and sealed the top of our chimney that was recently storm damaged. He did an excellent job for a very affordable price. He also does minor services such as cleaning roofs and gutters. Other services he offers are textured ceilings, water damage repair, small carpentry, and pressure washing. Call him to see if he can help you. He can be reached on his cell phone at 256-655-2652. He is insured and licensed. Tell him we sent you!

MY MARATHON-I DID IT!!!! 26.2Posted on: 2009-05-01Despite the grueling temps-87 degrees on the BLACK pavement with 25-35 mph DRY winds, a bum knee, and a blister the size of a golf ball on the bottom of my foot, I finished! I cannot thank each and everyone of you enough-for your donations to my fundraising, for your encouraging words, and prayers!
My “official” chip time is not posted on line yet. I am estimating around 6:30. The time in the picture is from when the marathon started (they did a wave start, and I was in coral 22.) FYI-nearly 32,000 people in this event, and LESS THAN 4,000 completed the full marathon!
